MGCCC to host environmental forum at Jefferson Davis Campus

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jefferson Davis Campus in Gulfport and its Omicron Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society will host an environmental sustainability forum on April 9 in the campus Fine Arts Auditorium. Guest speakers will be Larry Lee, chief sustainability officer from The University of Southern Mississippi, and Mark E. Lishen, a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional architect, and principal of Eley Guild Hardy Architects PA. LEED architecture must incorporate such goals as energy efficiency, water conservation, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Following the ceremony, PTK members, with the assistance of the campus Student Council, will clean up litter along Switzer Road, which the organization has adopted as part of a beautification service project. The project is a joint effort with the Harrison County Board of Supervisors. A cookout and pool party, sponsored by the Jefferson Davis Campus Faculty Association, will be provided for participating students.
