Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College students began classes Friday, August 21, with the highest enrollment numbers since Hurricane Katrina, breaking the college’s 10,000-plus enrollment goal for fall 2009. The enrollment number was 10,239 Friday morning, but students continue to register during late registration through August 27.
“The continual increase in student enrollment mirrors the recovery of the region since Hurricane Katrina,” said Dr. Willis Lott, president of Gulf Coast. “While we have reached the goal we set for fall semester, we look forward to continued growth to meet the needs of the citizens in our four-county district.”
Gulf Coast’s locations in George, Harrison, Jackson and Stone counties are all experiencing enrollment increases. By offering flexible class schedules, including online classes, Gulf Coast strives to make college convenient for South Mississippi residents. Tuition costs have remained affordable at $900 per semester for a full-time student.
“With academic transfer programs and more than 50 career and technical programs, Gulf Coast is meeting the educational demands of South Mississippi,” Lott added. “In fact, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is the only institution in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana to be named in Community College Week magazine’s list of top 100 associate-degree producers in the nation.”
There is still time to enroll at Gulf Coast. Late registration for the fall semester closes August 27.
