Publication of works in Illumination is open to current students of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.  The submission deadline to be considered for publication by the editorial board for the 2020-2021 edition is May 3, 2021.

Works can be submitted in the following categories and should follow these guidelines:

Short Fiction
Works of short fiction should be no longer than 3,500 words, and should be double-spaced with page numbers.
Poetry
Poetry works should be no longer than 10 pages and may be free verse or fixed verse in the form of a sonnet, villanelle, sestina, cinquain, pantoum, haiku, etc.
Literary Criticism
Critical essays should be documented correctly according to MLA/APA guidelines and should be no longer than 1,200 words (not including Works Cited page).
Personal Essay/Nonfiction
Essay types include description, illustration/exemplification, comparison-contrast, narrative, classification, process, cause-effect, definition, or editorial/political opinion. An entry should be formatted according to basic MLA guidelines and no longer than 1,500 words.
Comic Strip
Original comic strip/story no longer than 15 standard pages (book pages will print in 9″ x 6″ format).
Artwork
Artwork should be print ready, high resolution, in either .jpg or .png format. All artwork will be printed in black and white – preference given to black-and-white originals.

Title of Manuscript (in italics)
Category

Works should be submitted electronically using the Illumination Submission Form and must be in one of the following file formats:

  • Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx)
  • Adobe PDF (.pdf)
  • Plain Text (.txt)
  • Images for Artwork (.jpg, .png)

Please name files using the following convention:
Category – Title – Author
Ex: Poetry – Ode to a Tree – Jane Doe.docx
