simulation of emergency room patient getting care.

State of the Art Training and Education Facility

At Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Healthcare Simulation Center, healthcare students and licensed healthcare providers and staff practice simulated healthcare training.

Simulation is the creation of highly realistic, mock patient-care encounters through the use of standardized patients (actors), human patient simulators (robots), or a combination of the two.

About the Healthcare Simulation Center

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Healthcare Simulation Center is a roughly 8,000 square foot, simulated 6-bed hospital setup for scenarios related to:

  • Emergency Department/Triage
  • Obstetric/Pediatric
  • Intensive Care/Critical Care
  • Medical-Surgical
  • Home Health Services

The simulation scenarios at the Healthcare Simulation Center are created based upon QSEN, IOM, and NLN Standards. The Center has access to a wide variety of simulation scenarios through the National League for Nursing Simulation in Nursing Series as well as scenarios that have been written and designed by the Director of the Simulation Center and the MGCCC Health Sciences Faculty.

As a community partner looking to maintain or enhance employee education and training, MGCCC has the resources necessary to leverage the training needs of your staff.

Why Healthcare Simulation?

A Safe Learning Environment

A Healthcare Simulation provides a safe environment to:

  • Practice patient care
  • Maintain annual care competencies
  • Learn to work effectively with other members of a healthcare team
  • Learn and synthesize new skills in a setting where there is no actual risk to a real patient

Simulation relies on reflective learning, through debriefing, in which learners get the opportunity to review their performance through video recordings of the simulation scenario. Reviewing their performance with peers and faculty or simulation facilitators allows learners to solidify and retain the lessons they learned about patient care which then allows them to provide safe quality care to their patients.

Simulation Quickly Becoming the New Educational Standard

Several expert healthcare groups and governing bodies (e.g. National League for Nursing, Institute of Medicine, Interprofessional Education Collaborative) have called for an integration of simulation into healthcare education and training in order to improve the quality and safety of patient care in the United States.

Some healthcare licensing agencies are planning to or starting to require simulation as part of their licensure exam. MGCCC has responded to this call for better healthcare training and education through simulation, by building the simulation center and integrating simulation scenarios into Nursing and Allied Health courses.
