The Jefferson Davis Players will present “A Voice of My Own,” a play by Elinor Jones, Oct. 24-27 at the Arena Theatre at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jefferson Davis Campus. Curtain is at 8 p.m. on Oct. 24-26 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27.

About “A Voice of My Own”

The play covers a broad spectrum of female writers, from Sappho, the lyrical poet of ancient Greece, to present-day writers, emphasizing not only the triumphs of women in literature, but also the discouragement, derision and disbelief to which they were often subjected.

Spanning 26 centuries, the play evokes the words and feelings of women who had to hide behind anonymity or male names to practice their art, and from whom fantastic strength of character and indomitability were required. That they succeeded so brilliantly in their efforts is not only a tribute to these talented women in particular but, in a more general sense, to the irrepressible spirit of the entire “other half” of humanity, whose voice would not be denied.

JD Players Cast and Crew

The cast includes Shannon Wooten, Stephanie Grammar, Hadley Hill, Zada McClendon and Summerlin LaCour. Ryan Pierini is the director, and crew members include Ariel McClendon, stage manager; James Rojas, assistant stage manager; Ian Phillips, light board; Kaitlynn Dumal, sound board; and Erika Ritter, costume design.
