Band of Gold Frequently Asked Questions
Is college marching band for music majors only?
No! The Band of Gold consists of members from all college majors. College marching band is a great place to make friends and provides a social / peer group for all its members.
What is the time commitment for Band of Gold Members?
Most Band of Gold members have not found time management to be a problem even with the largest of academic loads. The Band of Gold rehearses from 3:00 – 5:00 Monday through Thursday, with most of the football games on Thursday nights. Few classes conflict with these time slots. The Band of Gold offers ways to resolve minor conflicts, and on occasion, our performance schedule will allow some well-deserved time off.
Is there a band camp?
Yes! The Band of Gold band camp starts a week before schools starts. Camp information is mailed in late July/early August. Guard and percussion come to MGCCC for several rehearsals before camp starts. Students are able to move in for the semester the day of camp registration. Meals and dormitory lodging for camp are paid by MGCCC.
Do I get credit and how am I graded for the Band of Gold?
The Band of Gold is a scheduled class for 2 credit hours. You are graded primarily on attendance at rehearsals and performances. Every member receives a handbook, music and drill the first day of camp. Detail policies, performance schedules, and additional information are available in the Calendar and Current Students sections of this website.
How do I audition for the Band of Gold?
Only Percussion, Color Guard, and Out-of-State Students need to audition. These students must attend the Audition date in May (or Out-of-State Students can make an appointment to audition prior to the audition date).
There is a brief screening for part assignments during band camp. There is also an opportunity at the end of band camp to audition for additional scholarship money. More information on this will be given at band camp.
