Dr. Joanna Burnside and Daniel Vernon, music instructors at MGCCC’s Perkinston Campus, will perform a vocal and piano recital on Dec. 9.

Daniel Vernon and Dr. Joanna Burnside, music faculty at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus, will be giving a vocal and piano recital on the Perkinston Campus on Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Malone Auditorium. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Vernon and Burnside performed in the New Faculty Recital at the Mississippi Music Teachers Association (MMTA) on Nov. 1 and again at a Gulf Coast Music Teachers Association (GCMTA) workshop on Nov. 9. They presented vocal/piano works by Maurice Ravel, Charles-Francois Gounod and Renaldo Hahn.

During the workshop, Vernon spoke with the teachers, parents and students about the benefits of a community college education and ways music students can prepare for college. MGCCC student Lauren Wise also spoke to the group about her experiences at the college, and performed a vocal selection by Hugo Wolf.

On Nov. 7, Vernon led a reading session for choir directors at the Mississippi Music Educators Association (MMEA) District workshop, with Burnside assisting at the piano. Burnside also accompanied a reading session presented by Joel Dunlap, director of choral activities at Long Beach High School.

“These performances and workshops are a great opportunity for us to share more about the good things we have to offer in the music department at MGCCC, as well as provide us a chance to network with colleagues and friends from around the state who are in the field of music,” Burnside said.

Vernon and Burnside are both members of MMTA and GCMTA. Both organizations are affiliates of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA.) MTNA is a non-profit organization promoting music and professional development of music teachers throughout the country.

Vernon joined the Perkinston music faculty this fall. He is a graduate of MGCCC’s Perkinston Campus, and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education and choral conducting from The University of Southern Mississippi. Burnside began working at the Perkinston Campus in 1997. She holds a doctorate in piano performance with a minor in music theory from Louisiana State University. Her master’s and bachelor’s degrees are in piano performance from USM.
