Stunning Self-Portraits Shine
Two art students from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Jackson County Campus won awards at the 2018 Mississippi Community / Junior College Art Instructors Association (MCJCAIA) State Collegiate Art Competition. The competition, held at Hinds Community College earlier this month, represented 15 of the 16 community colleges in the state and had over 140 entries.
Amber Castro, a sophomore from Gautier, won first place, and Maria Lawrence, a sophomore from Pascagoula, won third place, both in the 2-D Design category. They both submitted self-portraits. Castro’s was a cut-paper collage from this semester’s Design II art class. Lawrence submitted a typographic self-portrait built-up from handwritten text made in last semester’s Design I art class.
“The competition features the best works submitted for the academic school year from Mississippi’s community/junior colleges,” said Marc Poole, art instructor at the Jackson County Campus. “Thousands of potential artists and hundreds of projects are included in consideration for these awards. Art instructors pick the best of their students’ works and submit them.”
I am really proud that my gang brought home these awards. Congratulations to both!
