Six students from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College won prestigious scholarships from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.   

Emma Landry of Gautier, Tina Nguyen of Biloxi and Logan Simmons of Ocean Springs were named 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars. Nugyen was also named an Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholar, and Jessica Rushing of Vancleave was named a Trustmark Workforce Development Scholar. Both Joshua Watson of Biloxi and Bayleigh Kelton of Lucedale were awarded the Walgreens Pharmacy Technician Certification Scholarship.

After graduating from MGCCC, Landry, a Spanish major at the Jackson County Campus and a member of the PTK Leadership Team, plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree, as well as a graduate degree in speech pathology.  At JC, she is also involved in the Baptist Student Union, Rotaract, Circle K and Honors College.

Simmons, a biology major at the Jackson County Campus and member of the PTK Leadership Team, plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree after MGCCC and then pursue graduate work in physical therapy.  At JC, she is the historian for the Student Government Association.

After graduating from MGCCC’s Jackson County Campus, Nguyen plans to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine.  She is currently vice president and Southern Regional Representative for PTK and is a member of the STEM Club.  In addition to the Leaders of Promise Scholarship, Nguyen was one of only 25 students selected worldwide for the Oberndorf award.

Rushing, a Radiologic Technology major and PTK member at the Jackson County Campus, will use the Trustmark scholarship to pay for occupational certification exam costs associated with her career field. At JC, she is also involved in the Campus Activity Board and PTK.

Watson, a pharmacy major and PTK member at the Harrison County Campus, will use the Walgreens scholarship to pay for certification exam costs associated with his career field.  On campus, he is also involved in the Honors College.

Kelton, a pharmacy major and PTK member at the George County Center, will use the Walgreens scholarship to pay for certification exam costs associated with her career field.

Phi Theta Kappa offers its members scholarship opportunities that help defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential.
