MGCCC’s Harrison County Campus SVA supports homeless veterans through Backpack Buddies initiative
The Harrison County Campus chapter of the Student Veterans of America (SVA) at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is making a difference in the lives of homeless veterans this holiday season through their Backpack Buddies initiative. This heartfelt effort, spearheaded by SVA advisor and daughter of a veteran, LeeQunita Brazzle, demonstrates the college’s ongoing commitment to supporting the veteran community.
The initiative involves collecting essential supplies such as blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, and hygiene products to fill backpacks donated by area Army National Guard recruiter SSG Anthony Santos. Brazzle coordinated the collection of these items and assembled the backpacks to ensure they are ready for delivery. On Thursday, December 12, the backpacks were delivered to the Biloxi VA, where Brazzle’s contact will distribute them to homeless veterans in time for Christmas.
“I came up with the idea of Backpack Buddies for Veterans because I wanted to address some of the unique challenges our veterans face as they transition back into civilian life,” Brazzle shared. “Many veterans deal with homelessness, unemployment, mental health struggles, or a lack of essential resources. I wanted to create a program that not only provides tangible support but also shows appreciation for their service in a meaningful way.”
The Backpack Buddies initiative is more than just a donation drive; it’s a powerful symbol of community and compassion. In addition to essential items, the backpacks include personal notes of encouragement, offering a reminder to veterans that they are not forgotten.
“This effort shows that MGCCC is committed to supporting the veteran community, regardless of their status as students,” Brazzle added. “Veterans don’t need to be enrolled to feel the love and compassion MGCCC has for them.”
The initiative highlights the college’s dedication to serving its veteran and military population and reflects the values of empathy and action that define MGCCC’s culture.
