MGCCC’s West Harrison County Center Cosmetology Technology students provide haircuts for the homeless

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s West Harrison County Center Cosmetology Technology program recently made a remarkable impact on the local community by providing complimentary haircuts for homeless individuals. On February 26, students and their instructor gathered at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Gulfport to participate in the annual event. The service project not only offered essential grooming services but also provided the students with valuable hands-on experience in a real-world setting.

“Our students have worked hard to develop their skills, and events like this demonstrate how those talents can serve the community. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them put their training to use while making a difference in people’s lives,” said Cosmetology instructor Jennifer Ginn.

The students embraced the opportunity to give back, with one participant, Jaclyn Powers from Gulfport, sharing, “Taking part in this service project was a truly uplifting experience. It felt amazing to use my skills to help others and to be part of something that genuinely improves our community.”

Addison Godard, also a student from Gulfport, added, “I’ve always been passionate about helping the homeless, and being part of this project at St. Mark’s, where I recognized familiar faces, was incredibly fulfilling. The program at MGCCC’s West Harrison County Center has prepared me well—not only in cosmetology but also in serving our community with compassion and professionalism.”

Meanwhile, Shea Johnson, originally from California, reflected on her personal journey into cosmetology by explaining, “Growing up with my father, a barber, and my aunt, who owns a salon, cosmetology was a natural choice for me. Participating in this service project reminded me why I entered this field. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces after a fresh haircut is an experience that fills my heart with joy.”

The Cosmetology Technology program is a year-long course offered at the West Harrison County Center in Long Beach and the George County Center in Lucedale. Students have a variety of pathways available, including options in Nail Technology, Cosmetology Teacher Training, and a no-cost Work Ready training program for those who qualify.
