MGCCC Harrison County Campus to host annual Student Art Exhibition and Competition

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Harrison County Campus will showcase the 2025 Student Art Exhibition and Competition from April 7-May 2 in the Fine Arts building. The show, which is held annually, will include works by students in Drawing, Design, Painting, and Computer Art courses.
A reception and awards presentation will be held at 11 a.m. on May 1 in the Art Gallery.
“I’m excited to share the works of our students with the campus and community,” said 2-D arts instructor and gallery manager Cecily Cummings. “I think they’ll be impressed and inspired by the talent and creativity showcased in the exhibit.”
Among the students showcased is Meredith Legagneux of Biloxi.
“Before attending MGCCC, I was primarily an illustrator, specializing in both digital illustration and inks, pencil, and markers on paper,” she said. “After taking art classes here I’ve been able to add painting to my specialties. I’ve particularly learned to love watercolor and oils.”
Her style inspirations are Impressionism, visible, unblended brushstrokes, as well as a general taste for goth and macabre subjects.
Kelly Vo of Biloxi has been drawing since elementary school.
“Art means a lot to me, and it is something I think about constantly,” she said.
She was primarily influenced by Western cartoons, indie animations, and then semi-realistic anime as she grew older.
“Efficient, fast, yet detailed and recognizable. Those are my goals and ideals in art,” she said. “I have been slowly but surely moving into spaces out of my comfort zone with every passing day. I am still very much learning in every single respect of the word ‘learning’ but, I’ll never stop chasing improvement.”
Eva Brown of Gulfport has been doing art “since I was old enough to hold a pencil.”
The daughter of artists, both parents encouraged her art journey, and she was even able to be in her dad’s art class at Gulfport High School.
“I’ve enjoyed pursuing my associates here at MGCCC. I enjoyed figure drawing, helping out with the Three Musketeers theater production, and Government class. I’ve gotten to explore so many interests,” she said. “I hope to pursue art for a career and continue to explore the many ways to create after I graduate.”
The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Harrison County Campus is located at 2226 Switzer Rd, Gulfport. The Art Gallery is in the Fine Arts building, building D.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, contact Cecily.Cummings@mgccc.edu or 228-897-3909.
