Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Respiratory Care Technology students earned first place at the 2026 Magnolia Sputum Bowl, held in March during the Mississippi Society for Respiratory Care State Conference in Raymond.
The MGCCC team, known as the Bronchial Ballers, competed against top respiratory therapy programs from across the state, advancing through multiple rounds before securing the championship title.
Coordinated by Respiratory Care Technology faculty Jennifer Patrick, MBA, RRT, Program Director, and Dr. Bernie Toothaker, EdD, RRT, Director of Clinical Education, the team demonstrated exceptional knowledge and skill across a range of respiratory care disciplines. The competition tested students in areas including patient assessment, mechanical ventilation, pharmacology, cardiopulmonary physiology and critical care.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of our students and the strength of MGCCC’s Respiratory Care Technology program,” Patrick said. “Their performance at the state level showcases not only their academic preparation but also their readiness to enter the healthcare workforce with confidence.”
As state champions, the team will represent Mississippi at the national Sputum Bowl competition during the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Congress 2026 this November.
Toothaker emphasized the significance of the opportunity. “Competing at the national level allows our students to measure themselves against the best in the country while gaining invaluable professional experience,” he said. “We are proud of their accomplishment and excited to see them represent MGCCC and the state of Mississippi.”
The winning team includes Braleigh Husley (team captain), Kelsea Hempstead, and Crystal Ladner. Parrish Jones served as the team’s alternate.
The recognition strengthens the college’s partnerships with regional healthcare providers, enhances student recruitment and awareness of the program, and supports the preparation of highly skilled respiratory therapists to serve the Gulf Coast and surrounding communities.
