A powerful and productive running back, Dantrell Savage established himself as one of the top players in Mississippi Gulf Coast football history before carrying that success to the Big 12 and the NFL.
A native of Columbus, Georgia, Savage was a standout for the Bulldogs, rushing for more than 2,000 yards during his career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His ability to consistently produce on the ground made him one of the nation’s premier junior college running backs and a major offensive force for Gulf Coast.
Savage’s outstanding 2005 season brought recognition at both the state and national levels. He earned NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors and was selected as a J.C. Gridiron News (formerly J.C. Grid-Wire) All-American. He was also named First Team All-MACJC, placing him among the best players in one of the country’s most competitive junior college football conferences.
His performance at Gulf Coast opened the door to Oklahoma State University, where Savage quickly proved he could excel at the NCAA Division I level. Over two seasons with the Cowboys, he rushed for more than 2,000 yards and scored 19 touchdowns. He earned Offensive MVP honors in Oklahoma State’s 2006 Independence Bowl victory over Alabama and capped his collegiate career with a standout 2007 season, ranking 17th nationally in rushing and earning First Team All-Big 12 honors.
Savage’s football career continued at the professional level when he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He appeared in 13 NFL games with the Chiefs, contributing at running back and on special teams, and later spent time with the Carolina Panthers organization.
From an All-American career at Gulf Coast to First Team All-Big 12 honors and the NFL, Savage’s journey reflects the talent and opportunity that have long defined Bulldog football. His more than 2,000 rushing yards and national honors at Mississippi Gulf Coast established the foundation for an exceptional career and earned him a place in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Athletic Hall of Fame.
