Originally from the Sunflower Community in Perkinston, Mississippi, Edith graduated in 1962 from Perkinston Agricultural High School on the college’s Perkinston Campus. During her high school years, she stayed actively involved, playing basketball and running track. Although her time as a junior college student lasted just one semester, her bond with the college grew stronger over the decades.

One of the most unique ways Edith has contributed to the college is through her artistry. She is known for her intricate cross-stitch work, creating pieces that celebrate the spirit and history of MGCCC. Her journey into cross stitching began years ago with a simple inspiration.

“I got a cross-stitch pattern for Mississippi State University,” she said. “I thought, why not create my own pattern for MGCCC? And that’s how I got started making patterns to cross stitch all kinds of things for the college.”

That spark of creativity has since grown into a meaningful legacy, with Edith producing numerous pieces that highlight the college’s identity and traditions.

Edith and her husband, Louis Rutherford, share a deep connection to the college. Louis, a 1961 graduate of Perkinston Agricultural High School, went on to graduate from the college in 1963. Though they had known each other for years, their relationship blossomed after high school.

“We got married in 1966 and the rest is history!” Edith said.

As lifetime members of the college’s Alumni Association, the couple has remained actively involved, regularly attending events and staying connected to campus life.

Edith’s dedication to preserving MGCCC’s history is just as meaningful as her artistic contributions. In 2015, she donated a remarkable collection of items to the college’s Archives, including memorabilia from her 1962 graduation, historical programs from dances and plays, and a shadow box featuring her athletic letters and a photograph. Her extensive cross-stitch collection was also included, adding a personal and creative dimension to the college’s historical record.

Her thoughtful contributions have continued in recent years. In 2024, Edith created a cross-stitched football featuring the name and number of fellow Sunflower native Jerry Love, which she gifted to Alumni & Events Coordinator Tharessa Love Williams. The gesture was especially meaningful, as Tharessa’s father shared a lifelong friendship with Edith’s brother, Noel, also an alumnus of the college. This year, Edith again enriched the Archives with another significant donation, including her husband’s class ring and additional memorabilia from their time at Perkinston Agricultural High School.

According to college archives staff, these contributions are invaluable, offering a rare and detailed glimpse into student life and traditions from decades past. Edith’s pieces not only preserve cherished memories but also help tell the story of MGCCC for future generations.

Edith’s connection to the college runs even deeper through her family. Her father, Clayton Patton, served on the college’s Board of Trustees from 1966 to 1970. Her brother, Jim Patton, also an alumnus, has served on the MGCCC Foundation Board and as an officer in the Alumni Association, further strengthening the family’s legacy at the college.

“The college is certainly part of my family’s history,” Edith said. “We love this place and enjoy talking about the many wonderful memories we have of attending here.”

Through her creativity, generosity, and enduring support, Edith Patton Rutherford exemplifies what it means to be a devoted alumna. She not only cherishes the past but actively helps preserve it for the future.
