Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has been named a Military Spouse Friendly School and is the only community college in the state to receive the honor.  This prestigious list is created using data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations to create a comprehensive guide for military spouses looking to further their education. This year, only 133 schools out of 8,800 in the nation earned the designation.

“We are proud to offer outstanding educational and training opportunities to members of our military, their families and veterans,” said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president.  “MGCCC has always had a strong relationship with the military and values the opportunity to have a presence at all of the military installations on the Coast.”

The schools on the list have instituted policies to address the concerns and needs of military spouses and their families.  Individuals in the military and their families face unique problems when deciding to go to college.  MGCCC and other schools on the list have constructed their admissions, retention, career counseling and mentoring programs to help alleviate those difficulties.

MGCCC also received the Military Friendly School designation, being ranked No. 1 on the 2020-21 list for the nation’s largest community colleges.  MGCCC has had a top 10 designation for the past two years.

The college provides a wide variety of services to active-duty military personnel, their families and veterans, assisting them in scheduling courses around temporary duty assignments and interruptions for deployment. The institution’s military withdrawal policy ensures military students avoid any hardships when called into active duty. Additionally, the college offers military-base campus representatives to provide one-stop-shop services, including priority registration assistance, degree evaluations and book service. MGCCC also provides a VA school certifying official (SCO) to meet the needs of veterans, military spouses and military dependents. Enrollment specialists at campus locations coordinate the review of transfer credit/military credit.  Finally, active-duty military students and veterans receive in-state tuition.
