Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is proud to announce that career-technical instructor Obey Parker has been selected to receive the prestigious Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty Award from the American Association of Community Colleges for 2025. With 20 years of dedicated service teaching construction and residential maintenance at the Perkinston Campus and two regional correctional facilities in the college’s district, Obey Parker offers hope for a brighter future to justice-involved students.

“Obey is so deserving of the Dale P. Parnell Award,” said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president. “His exemplary teaching practices, unwavering advocacy, and dedication to student success truly exemplify the qualities sought by this award. I know Obey will continue to inspire and empower those around him, leaving a legacy in the field of education.”

Throughout his tenure, Parker has demonstrated a commitment to innovative and compassionate education. His classroom is a dynamic environment where evidence-based teaching strategies merge with vital life and employment skills. He ensures that his students not only grasp the material but also recognize a clear pathway to success. His inclusive peer-to-peer learning approach fosters collaboration and empowers students to support one another in their educational journeys.

Beyond his work within the classroom, Parker is involved with several college committees and a variety of community organizations. His dedication to teaching is evident in his efforts to connect with all students, including wards of the state—individuals who often face significant challenges to hope and self-worth. Moreover, his commitment extends to the community at large; from rebuilding efforts after hurricanes to constructing essential facilities for local organizations, Parker’s contributions have made a lasting impact.

Parker is now leading the Commercial and Residential Construction Technology program at the George County Correctional Facility in Lucedale. This innovative program, made possible by the Lowe’s Gable Grant, equips students with essential trade skills in carpentry, electrical work, masonry, and plumbing—skills that have the power to transform lives.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” Parker said. “Every day in my classroom is a reminder of the incredible potential of our students, and I am humbled to be part of their journey. This recognition is not just for me—it is a tribute to the resilience and hard work of every student who has walked through my door. I remain committed to building bridges to opportunity and empowering each student to succeed.”
