A native of Gulfport, Mississippi, with deep roots along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and in New Orleans, Chef Chelle discovered her love for cooking at home, where the kitchen was a place of gathering and joy. That early inspiration eventually led her to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Culinary Arts program at the Harrison County Campus, where she turned passion into purpose.
“I developed my passion for cooking by watching my mother in the kitchen. She inspired my love for food, family, and the joy that comes from bringing people together around a meal. That early influence played a major role in my decision to pursue culinary arts and continues to shape the heart of my work today.,” Smith said.
And choosing MGCCC as her professional training ground was easy. “MGCCC’s Culinary Arts program stood out because of its hands-on training and strong reputation. It felt like the perfect place to build a solid foundation while staying connected to my community.”
During her time at MGCCC, she thrived in the fast-paced, real-world environment of the culinary labs. Practical training and live events challenged her to perform under pressure while maintaining quality, professionalism, and teamwork—experiences that continue to shape her approach today.
“Those moments taught me discipline, confidence, and the pride that comes from completing a successful service,” she said. “That feeling never leaves you.”
She credits her instructors at MGCCC with pushing her beyond her comfort zone and instilling the values that still guide her work.
“They taught me that excellence and consistency matter just as much as creativity,” Smith said. “Their belief in me helped shape my work ethic and gave me the confidence to pursue my own business.”
After graduating, Smith continued gaining experience in the culinary field while refining her personal style and vision. That journey eventually led her to launch Chef Chelle Fine Foods & Catering LLC, a full-service catering company specializing in elevated Southern cuisine and unforgettable dining experiences.
Today, she serves clients across the Gulf Coast, including Ingalls Shipbuilding, MGCCC, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, among many others. Her professionalism and culinary excellence have also earned regional recognition, including an appearance on WLOX in celebration of National Chef Day.
More than a local business owner, Chef Chelle is a proud MGCCC alumna and Gulf Coast native. Through every dish she creates, she delivers her deep love for food, people, and the community that shaped her. They are all part of what she calls the Chef Chelle Experience.
