MGCCC’s Dance Team Competes at UDA’s College Camp

The Perkette Dance Team from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus won several awards at the Universal Dance Association’s (UDA) College Camp at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The camp, which ran from July 19-22, included both dance team training and competition. Both university and community college groups in attendance.

MGCCC’s UDA Awards

The Perkettes won several awards competing against large teams like the ones from University of Alabama, Florida State University, and Louisiana State University, including:

  • First place for Home Routine in the Open Division
  • Most Improved Program
  • Most Collegiate
  • All superiors in evaluations, time-out routine, and game day demo

“UDA staff had a saying: Don’t sleep on Gulf Coast.”

“This was MGCCC’s first time ever competing in a home routine – a routine they prepared before camp — and they could not have made our school any prouder,” said Coach Britney Kuehn. “The girls have been working so hard throughout the summer, and we are extremely proud of their success. I received comments from other schools and UDA staff members about how professional and talented these girls are.”

About the Perkettes

The Perkettes are the official dance team at MGCCC and are members of the college’s Band of Gold. They perform in MGCCC football halftime shows, pep rallies, and a range of other college, alumni and community events.

“During the camp, UDA staff had a saying, ‘Don’t sleep on Gulf Coast,’ because they said no one could sleep on the Perkettes this year,” Kuehn said. “The work ethic, determination and passion of this team have made them a true force to be reckoned with. What a strong and incredible way to start off our season. We are honored by the amazing recognition at camp and cannot wait to see what the rest of the year has in store.”
