College holds three ceremonies May 13–14, 2025 to celebrate graduates

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College honored the achievements of more than 2,000 students during Spring 2025 Commencement Week, holding three ceremonies May 13–14.

The week began with the Adult Education Graduation Ceremony on May 13, where 136 graduates received their high school equivalency diplomas. Among them was Arthur Minor, 32, of Gulfport, who not only completed his diploma but also graduated from MGCCC’s Commercial Truck Driving program at the West Harrison County Center.

“I feel like my life was on the wrong track for many years,” Minor said. “Now I am back on track and ready to face a better future for me and my family.”

On the morning of May 14, the School of Nursing & Health Professions held its Pinning & Recognition Ceremony, honoring 223 students in programs such as Associate Degree Nursing, Emergency Medical Sciences, Radiologic Technology, and more. The students marked their transition into healthcare by lighting candles and taking professional oaths.

Culminating the week’s events was the college’s main Commencement Ceremony on the evening of May 14 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. More than 3,000 degrees and credentials were awarded, with 883 graduates earning Honors Distinction.

During the ceremony, Dr. Joan Hendrix, DNP, RN, was recognized for her nearly 40 years of experience in nursing in both clinical and academic settings. She was awarded professor emeritus status for her deep commitment to student success, faculty support, and workforce development in healthcare across South Mississippi. Hendrix, who began her career at MGCCC in 2002 as a nursing instructor, most recently served as Associate Vice President of the School of Nursing & Health Professions and was instrumental in launching initiatives such as Mississippi’s first LPN Apprenticeship Program, the creation of a state-of-the-art simulation center, and the expansion of community-based workforce training and dual enrollment opportunities in allied health.

Among the many celebrated graduates was Maylin Skye Kyle, the first in her immediate family to attend and graduate from college. “When I changed my major to legal studies, I found my passion,” Kyle said. “I finished this semester with a 4.0—not for the grade, but because I truly enjoyed what I was learning.”

Nikoletta Ranno, originally from Poland, overcame cultural and language barriers to complete her studies. “With determination and perseverance, anything is possible,” she said. Ranno plans to become a certified interpreter and pursue an MBA.

Trevor Van Norman, a Collegiate Academy student, shared how MGCCC supported him through a difficult year. “I struggled with mental health and my father’s hospitalization, but the support from advisors, instructors, and campus counselors made all the difference,” he said. Van Norman plans to study microbiology at The University of Southern Mississippi and become a general surgeon.

Micah Long, SGA President at the George County Center, graduated through Collegiate Academy. A volunteer firefighter, he plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in worship leadership. “Being involved in student government and Reflections helped me grow as a leader,” Long said. “I am thankful to the support I received at MGCCC in completing high school but also graduating with my associate degree. The wonderful faculty and staff at the college have made a tremendous impact on my life, one that has prepared me for future success.”

From adult learners earning high school equivalency diplomas to dual-enrolled high school students graduating with college degrees, the ceremonies during MGCCC’s Commencement week reflected the diversity of backgrounds and experiences that make up the MGCCC community. As graduates step into new careers, further education, and brighter futures, the college remains steadfast in its mission to provide high-quality educational opportunities to residents of South Mississippi.
