Dr. Javier G. Gómez, a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, attended the University of Florida where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and linguistics. Before coming to MGCCC, Dr. Gómez taught English as a Second Language (ESL), French, Japanese, and Spanish with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in Tokyo, Japan. Since being at Gulf Coast, Dr. Gómez has been named Humanities Teacher of the Year for the Jackson County Campus in 2013, Instructor of the Year in 2016, and proposed, designed, and teaches Japanese 1 and 2 at the Jackson County Campus making MGCCC the only community college in the state to offer Japanese.

Dr. Gómez is a proud Golden Eagle. In 2006 he received his Master of Arts in the Teaching of Languages (MATL) and in 2016 he finished his doctorate in Instructional Technology and Design (ITD) both from The University of Southern Mississippi.

Most recently, Dr. Gómez was honored with the 2017 Moody Institute Trust Fund (MITF). The MITF was established in 1990 in honor of Dr. George V. Moody, the first executive director of the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges (SBCJC). Dr. Gómez used these funds to return to Japan where he conducted research on the dialect and culture of south Japan.
