Public Acknowledgement of Receipt of HEERF I Funds
- Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act on April 10, 2020.
- The College intends to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
Total Amount of HEERF I Funds Received by MGCCC
- Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College received funds in the amount of $3,940,140 under Section 18004(a)(1) of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
How the College Determined Which Students Would Receive HEERF I Grants
- Section 18004(c) of the CARES Act requires institutions to use funds received from Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care).
- The College has determined that the forced closing of all physical locations, including classrooms, labs, learning resource centers, student activities centers, residence halls, cafeterias, daycare centers; and the shifting of all traditional face-to-face classes and college services (admissions, financial aid, advising) to an online environment, has resulted in unexpected expenses for all MGCCC students in one or more of the following areas:
- Housing Expenses (closing of Residence Halls)
- Food Expenses (closing of Cafeterias and other food venues)
- Child Care Expenses (closing of on-campus daycare centers)
- Course Material and Technology Expenses (shift of traditional face-to-face courses to an online environment)
- Health Care Expenses (physical and emotional stress caused by the closing of all campus locations; the shift of all courses and services to an online environment; and forced social distancing limiting access to faculty, classmates, and friends)
- To be eligible to receive a CARES Grant, a student must have met all eligibility requirements under of the CARES Grant Program.
- Between May 15 and June 24, the College awarded grants to eligible students in the following amounts.
- Tier One Grant – $750. Students in Tier One are Pell eligible, demonstrating the highest financial need.
- Tier Two Grant – $500. Students in Tier Two are not Pell eligible, but have expected family contribution levels below the College’s posted Cost of Attendance.
- Tier Three Grant – $250. Students in Tier Three are not Pell eligible and have expected family contribution levels above the College’s posted Cost of Attendance.
- On July 15, the College increased the award amount for all three tiers by $300.
- On November 16, 2020, the College announced that it had a small amount of CARES grants remaining for eligible students (approximately $168,000.00). These funds were distributed to students in the form of $500 grants. To be eligible to receive a Spring 2021 CARES Grant, a student must have met all eligibility requirements under Section 18004(a)(1) of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Students could apply for these grants using an online application made available on November 16.
