Guel joined the Bulldogs from Gulfport High School, where he played under legendary coach Bert Jenkins. A three-year starter, Guel helped lead the Commodores to a remarkable 43-1 season and a Mississippi High School State Championship in his senior year.
Averaging 20 points per game, he was named Most Valuable Player in every tournament that season and shined in the Mississippi High School All-Star Game, where he tied for most points scored (18) and earned Most Valuable Defensive Player honors.
At Gulf Coast, Guel proved he could compete at the next level, becoming a starter both years under Coach Bob Weathers. As a freshman, he gained a reputation for his scoring ability and toughness on the boards. In his sophomore year, he led the Bulldogs in both points and rebounds and delivered several clutch performances that defined his time in a Bulldogs uniform.
In January 1971, Guel hit a game-winning 18-foot jumper with 10 seconds remaining to give Gulf Coast a dramatic 61-60 win over Pearl River, preserving a nearly perfect season. That same month, he poured in 28 points in a dominant 38-16 victory over the New Orleans Patriots and followed with 24 points in a 69-64 win over Jones Junior College.
After his playing days at Gulf Coast, Guel continued his academic and professional journey at The University of Southern Mississippi, where he majored in accounting. He went on to become a successful CPA, eventually becoming managing partner at Wright, Ward, Hatten, and Guel in Gulfport.
