Visitors to the Fine Art Gallery at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Harrison County Campus won’t need a radio to experience some of the greatest musicians of all time. Through October 24, the gallery will showcase Crossed Roads: From Music to Art, a vibrant exhibition by Gulfport artist Becci Rae Edwards featuring more than 40 colorful portraits of music legends ranging from Freddie Mercury and Dolly Parton to Jimi Hendrix and The Notorious B.I.G.

A special “jam session” reception will be held October 23 from 12:20–1:20 p.m. in the gallery. The event will include live performances by the MGCCC Concert Choir and C Side vocalists, who will present selections inspired by the exhibit.

Edwards, a Jackson native, grew up surrounded by music in her family home, where the sounds of gospel, blues, rock, and country filled the air. From attending Elvis Presley’s memorial service in 1977 to selling her artwork in Jackson Square in New Orleans, her life has been deeply intertwined with the rhythms and spirit of Southern music.

“Though I’m not musically inclined, the rhythms became part of my soul,” Edwards said. “I paint it. I feel it. From rock to rap to country, and everything in between.”

Her journey as an artist also became a source of healing. Following a battle with breast cancer, Edwards poured her emotions into a Grammy-themed series that honored her Southern roots. “I often say music saved my life,” she said.

Today, Edwards operates Crescent Blues Art Company in Bay St. Louis, with additional representation in New Orleans. Her work can be seen in galleries, murals, and event posters throughout the region.

“Music and art merged in a beautiful celebration of life,” Edwards said. “This exhibition represents the culmination of my journey, where art and music come together to uplift and inspire.”

The public is invited to visit the free exhibition and attend the October 23 reception.
