Train to be an Electric Lineman in One Semester

About the Program

The Apprentice Electric Lineman program at George County Center is a one semester, 600 hour program. Students receive specialized instruction in certification areas required by the electrical power industry. Upon completion, students are prepared for an entry level position as an electrical power-line installer or repairer.

The curriculum focuses on basic safety, basic electricity, pole climbing and bucket truck operation, along with other basic skills needed for entry level work in the utilities field.

Skills Taught (600 Total Clock Hours)

Basic Skills:

  • Basic Computer Applications
  • Basic Electricity, Codes, etc.
  • Basic Electricity I
  • Basic Electricity II
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • National Electric Code Course
  • National Electric Safety Code Course
  • RUS Specifications (Overhead and Underground)
  • Mississippi Class A Commercial Driver’s License

OSHA:

  • CPR, First Aid, and Blood borne Pathogens
  • Hazardous Material Training and Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Job Site Safety (Confined Space, Shoring, etc.)
  • Personal Protective Equipment Rigging

Power Company Specific:

  • Pole Climbing
  • Pole Top Rescue
  • Bucket Truck System Protection and Operation
  • Basic Transformer Change Out from Pole

Degree Options

By completing the 16 week program, students are eligible to receive an Undergraduate Certificate in Apprentice Electric Lineman.

An Associate of Applied Science degree is not applicable for the Apprentice Electric Lineman program.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet general admission requirements as well as the following special requirements:

  • Applications will be accepted beginning April 1 at the George County Center
  • 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or high school equivalency
  • Valid Mississippi driver’s license
  • Motor vehicle report with good driving record (for CDL)
  • DOT physical (indicating a body weight of 280 pounds or less) with a DOT substance test
  • Enjoy outdoor work
  • Physically able to climb
  • ACCUPLACER assessment with Algebra score of 231; Reading and Writing score of 474; or Enhance ACT English, Reading, and Math minimum of 16 in each section.
  • Pay the application cost and license fee to obtain a written permit for a Class A Mississippi Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from a Department of Public Safety (DPS) office that offers CDL. The application cost is $26 and the license fee is $13. A MS CDL manual that you can study before taking this written test is available online or you can purchase a manual for $2 from a DPS office.
