Gary Taylor portrait from 1985 yearbook.

A native of Long Beach, Taylor played as a tight end under legendary coach George Sekul and earned a two-year athletic scholarship to MGCCC. He served as co-captain of the storied 1984 Bulldog football team that brought home the NJCAA National Championship with a decisive 21-7 victory in Bel Air, Maryland. Taylor made a lasting mark in that game, catching two touchdown passes to help secure the title.

Taylor’s teammates and coaches recognized his heart and commitment to the program, naming him the recipient of the Team Spirit Award in both 1983 and 1984. His athletic achievements also earned him honorable mention on the 1984 MACJC All-State Team.

Gary Taylor’s impact at Gulf Coast extended far beyond the gridiron. He was inducted into the college’s Academic Hall of Fame in 1984 and was an active student leader. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Student Government Association, and Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. In addition to football, he also represented MGCCC on the golf course, showcasing his athletic versatility and Bulldog pride.

Gary Taylor exemplifies the ideal of the student-athlete, balancing championship-level performance with academic excellence and campus involvement.
