For Ivan Godwin, receiving the Cayce Seal Memorial Scholarship through the MGCCC Foundation is more than financial support. It is encouragement to keep moving forward, grounded in purpose, resilience, and service.

Ivan’s journey has been shaped by change and perseverance. Adopted at the age of three, he spent his early childhood in California before his family relocated to Mississippi. Those early transitions helped form the foundation of who he is today.

“Those experiences shaped my resilience and adaptability from a young age,” Ivan said. “I am now beginning my career as a lineman here in Mississippi, where I am focused on building a strong future through hard work, education, and dedication to my trade.”

Ivan is currently working for Chain Electric as a lineman while continuing his education, balancing demanding work with academic goals. Scholarships made possible through the MGCCC Foundation play a critical role for students like Ivan and helping ease financial pressure so they can focus on learning, skill-building, and long-term career success.

“Thank you very much for your generous support through the Cayce Seal Memorial Scholarship,” Ivan said. “I am truly grateful for this opportunity, as it helps ease my financial burden and allows me to focus more fully on my academic and professional goals. Your generosity has made a meaningful difference in my journey, and I sincerely appreciate your support.”

As part of the scholarship process, Ivan reflected deeply on the life and legacy of Cayce Seal, for whom the scholarship is named. In his essay, Ivan wrote about Cayce’s impact as a Gulf Coast native, athlete, firefighter, lineman, and mentor. He was someone known for humility, kindness, faith, and service to others.

Cayce Seal tragically lost his life in June 2021 at the age of 28 while working as a lineman. Even in death, Cayce continued to serve others as an organ donor. His family and friends honor his legacy with a simple but powerful message: Live Like Cayce.

Ivan sees that message not just as a tribute, but as a personal challenge.

“When I think about Cayce’s life, I see a lot of qualities I’d like to live by too,” Ivan wrote. “I try to be kind, help others when I can, and work hard for what I believe in. Like Cayce, I care about people and want to make a difference, even if it’s just by being there for someone who needs it.”

He also acknowledged the lessons still ahead like learning to give more of his time, to step up when things are difficult, and to live his faith through actions rather than words.

“Cayce’s story reminds me that life isn’t about how long we live, but how much good we do while we’re here,” Ivan wrote. “I hope that one day, people will say I lived like Cayce too.”

Through the support of the MGCCC Foundation and the legacy of the Cayce Seal Memorial Scholarship, Ivan Godwin is building a future defined by hard work, gratitude, and a commitment to making a difference on the job, in the classroom, and in his community.
