The Sawyers’ dedication to education is evident in their family history and personal experiences. Earline shared, “We were inspired to donate to MGCCC and specifically to Long Beach students because we have seen firsthand the quality of the educational offerings. My two children and seven grandsons all attended Long Beach Schools and came out well equipped for college classes.”

Earline’s educational journey began at the MGCCC Harrison County Campus in 1965. As a member of the first class on that campus, she fondly recalls, “I was very pleased with the new facilities and all it had to offer. It was a very economical way to get those first two years.” Lenny attended the Perkinston Campus and was later inducted into its Alumni Hall of Fame. Their daughter followed in Earline’s footsteps, attending the MGCCC Harrison County Campus before both mother and daughter proceeded to The University of Southern Mississippi.

Earline’s story is one of perseverance and dedication. Growing up on the Point in Biloxi, she was inspired by her parents, who, as products of the Depression, instilled in her the importance of education. Despite the allure of a scholarship to Mississippi University for Women, the summer of 1965 brought a life-changing encounter with Lenny.

Lenny’s journey began in Gulfport, where his family has been in the real estate business since 1901. A natural-born salesman with a love for people, Lenny found great success in commercial real estate.

Passing their opportunities on to future generations, the Sawyers hope their scholarship will inspire and support young individuals in finding their paths. Earline believes passionately in the power of education: “I truly believe that anyone who wants an education can get one. It may not be the traditional route, but MGCCC offers all sorts of opportunities.” Their endowment aims to ease financial burdens, allowing students to focus on their studies and succeed in their chosen fields.

Lenny’s advice to young people is simple yet profound: “If you love what you do, you will be good at it!” Their donation is a testament to this belief, designed to help students pursue their passions and achieve their goals.
