Victory Media has again named Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College a Military Friendly School for 2019-2020. This year, MGCCC is ranked seventh out of the nation’s largest community colleges on the list, making it a Top 10 honoree. More than 12,000 colleges, universities and trade schools compete for the Military Friendly designation each year.
Institutions of higher learning competed for the title by completing an extensive survey covering 10 indicators of success, including support for student veterans on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Only those in the top 15 percent are included on the list.
“MGCCC has had a strong relationship with the military for many years and values the opportunity to have a presence at all of the military installations on the Coast,” said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president. “It is our privilege to serve the men and women who risk their lives to protect our freedom and we are very proud of achieving this designation and also to be ranked in the top 10 of all community colleges in the nation.”
MGCCC was ranked in six different categories, exceeding standards by more than 50 percent on Academic Policies & Compliance, Admissions & Orientation, Culture & Commitment, Graduation & Career, and Military Student Support & Retention.
MGCCC helps active-duty students work their class time around temporary duty assignments and interruptions for deployment. Center directors at the Navy and Air Force facilities act as liaisons for the military and provide counseling, assessment, and registration assistance. Counselors at MGCCC campus locations review transfer credit/military credit and prepare SOC student agreements for active-duty members and dependents. Military members and veterans pay in-state tuition rates when they are stationed or reside on the Gulf Coast.
