Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will implement essential skills training for MGCCC Career students through three essential skills identified during the QEP topic selection process, which align with the college mission and Strategic Plan 2020. The skills are attendance/punctuality, speaking, and listening. The QEP topic originated from the student body, in which they stated a desire to be more adequately prepared for the workplace. After receiving feedback from stakeholders, the college determined that essential skills training should focus on the Career programs where students are moving through their programs in cohorts and entering the workforce immediately after graduation.
Assessment will include measures of student success tracked over time, curricular student learning outcomes measured within designated courses, and formative measures throughout the implementation of the QEP. Assessment will also include the effectiveness of the plan itself. The desired outcome is that the students will learn and be able to apply the three essential skills when they leave MGCCC and enter the next phase of their lives.
Direct Assessment (QEP Commitment #1 – Measuring Three Essential Skills)
Student learning outcomes describe what students will know or be able to demonstrate upon completing the course. The aim of the QEP Essential Skills Program is to provide training and development that promotes embracing the three essential skills to Career students: Attendance & Punctuality, Listening, and Speaking.
The Public Speaking Faculty member is responsible for assessing the student learning outcomes via the standardized QEP rubric during the term and submitting the data within five business days following the term end date. One report should be submitted per class.
The QEP Essential Skills Student Learning Outcome Reporting Template has been provided to the team of Public Speaking Faculty and the template mirrors the online student learning outcome submission form. Maintaining this document throughout the term will make it easier for Public Speaking Faculty to transfer data directly into the online submission form at end of each term.
The online QEP Embracing Essential Skills – Student Learning Outcome Submission Form should be completed within five business days following the end date of the term. The student learning outcome template in step #1 should be prepared in-advance. Public Speaking Faculty are advised to invest a sufficient amount of time to ensure the final submission is of high quality. Upon final submission of the online report, the report will automatically be e-mailed to the following individuals: #1 the public speaking instructor, #2 the collaborating career instructor, #3 QEP assessment subcommittee members, and #4 the QEP Director.
Additionally, the data from the report will automatically be fed into a QEP Essential Skills Student Learning Outcome Monitoring Dashboard via a live database connection. The student learning outcome data will be presented to the users of the report by implementation year and the results will be aggregated for each student learning outcome.

Indirect assessment allows stakeholders of the institution to better understand and evaluate the attitudes, opinions, and perceptions of target populations. The following groups of individuals will be asked to provide their honest feedback and evaluate aspects of QEP Essential Skills Program throughout implementation: career students, employees and employers. The institution will review the quantitative and qualitative feedback on an annual basis and make adjustments in an effort to promote the optimization of student learning and continually improve upon the model from year-to-year.
The team of Public Speaking Faculty and Career Instructors are vital to the success of the QEP Embracing Essential Skills program. This group of individuals is charged with implementing a series of structured student lessons and activities and assessing students at the end of each implementation phase. The Public Speaking Faculty and Career Instructors will be asked to complete the QEP Essential Skills Employee Survey on an annual basis at the conclusion of the spring semester. The online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and contains a series of quantitative and qualitative items. The survey is organized into five core blocks of items:
- Evaluating the organization and effectiveness of the essential skills training model
- Understanding the QEP experience and needs through the lens of a Public Speaking Faculty member or Career Instructor
- Evaluation of the student activities and lessons introduced in the classroom
- Term 1 Implementation
- Term 2 Implementation
- Term 3 Implementation
- Term 4 Implementation
- Experience evaluating students using the standardized rubrics and reporting data.
- Overall assessment of the QEP Essential Skills Program: Identify the Good & Areas of Opportunity for Improvement

The Annual Employer Survey gathers feedback from local employers that hire MGCCC graduates. At the end of each academic year the Teaching and Learning leadership team works to compile a contact list of all feeder employers that hire our MGCCC graduates. In a given year, we reach out to over 225 feeder employer contacts and request for these individuals to provide honest feedback regarding recently hired graduates. The online survey takes employers about 10 minutes to complete and is organized into four blocks of items:
- Employer Characteristics
- QEP Essential Skills
- Ability of recently hired graduates to demonstrate general education competencies
- Ability of recently hired graduates to demonstrate program-level competencies
- General feedback that can improve upon elements of an educational program offered at the institution
The second block of questions was added to the instrument to capture employer feedback regrading the three essential skills being developed by the QEP Embracing Essential Skills Program. Employers will be able to evaluate recently hired graduates in each of the three essential skill and be able to provide feedback. As a way to thank employers for taking the time to provide the institution with valuable feedback, employers will have a chance of winning one of four $50.00 Amazon gift cards. At the end of each QEP implementation term, career students will be provided laptops within the classroom or walked to a computer lab and asked to complete the QEP Essential Skills Student Survey. The Public Speaking Faculty member will be responsible coordinating the administration date and time with the career instructor and relaying the survey instructions to students on the date of administration. The online survey takes about 5-10 minutes to complete and contains a series of quantitative and qualitative items that are designed to capture student feedback of the QEP Embracing Essential Skills Program. As a way to thank career students for taking the time to provide the institution with valuable feedback, survey completers will have a chance of winning one of eight $50 Amazon gift cards. Institutional Annual Review
The institution will formally document the program effectiveness indicators, expected outcomes, results, and provide a detailed analysis of how we can use the results to drive continuous improvements through the online planning system. The QEP Embracing Essential Skills Program is deployed over four terms. The QEP Assessment Subcommittee will be charged with facilitating the data collection process and entering in the results within the online planning system. The QEP Implementation Committee will review the results on an annual basis to assess progress and make the determination where modifications can be made to promote continual program improvement.
