Embracing Essential Skills!
Every 10 years, as part of our reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), MGCCC has the opportunity to develop a new Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to improve an area of student learning or student success in a significant way through a college-wide, multi-year initiative. Our first QEP, Just Read It!, resulted in our faculty and students embracing active learning strategies to improve reading comprehension, and it continues to make an impact on student outcomes in this area.
MGCCC is now in the process of implementing the second QEP topic, and all college stakeholders have a role to play. Topic selection occurred in four phases with a final topic identified during the spring 2018 semester. In the first phase, topic ideas were submitted for consideration. In the second phase, proposals for possible QEP topics were submitted. In the third phase, the top proposals were identified by the members of the QEP Topic Selection Committee guiding this process. The top six proposals were shared with the MGCCC community for discussion and feedback through presentations made at each campus and center, with the Career-Technical Education advisory boards and through a survey disseminated to stakeholders.
The QEP Topic “Soft Skills for Hard Work” received broad-base support of institutional constituencies. Furthermore, it aligned with the college’s mission and Strategic Plan 2020. Finally, this topic also met a need indicated by the Career advisory councils and employer satisfaction surveys.
