Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College School of Nursing & Health Professions is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Contact Hour Process
Activities are eligible to provide ANCC NCPD contact hours when the activity is designed to address a gap in knowledge, skill, and/or practice for the professional registered nurse. Content must be based on the best-available evidence and planned independently from the influence of an ineligible company.*
*An ineligible company is defined as those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients. Click here for examples.
Required Planning Documents
Upon your request form being deemed eligible, the following language can be included in your activity’s advertising:
“This event is eligible for nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours; however, the number of hours is yet to be determined.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, School of Nursing and Health Professions, is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.”
Upon completion of all required documentation, the nurse planner will indicate the value of contact hours and provide you with the specific language you can include on advertising moving forward.
An agenda is required if the activity is greater than 3 hours and provides detailed information for participants. It includes the following:
- event title
- start/end time
- location
- desired learning outcome
- content time (ensuring breaks are excluded from contact hour value)
- topic(s) covered
- presenter(s) name and credentials
- event contact
The nurse planner will provide the designated activity contact with a planning table document to identify the following components:
- Name and date of educational activity
- Content to be covered
- Time required to cover content
- Presenter/author name(s) and credentials
- Learning engagement strategies
- Evidence-based references
For activities covering clinical topics, a Relevant Financial Relationship Disclosure is required to be completed for all people involved in the educational activity who have the ability to control content. This information is collected through the Contact Hour Request Form.
- Financial relationships with ineligible companies within the last 24 months
- Reference unlabeled/unapproved use of drugs/products in any presentation
- Attestation of continuing education value statements
- Adherence to high standards of professionalism
The nurse planner is required to collect, review, mitigate, and disclose relevant financial relationships to learners.
A standardized PowerPoint slide will be provided to the activity contact. This slide—or its contents in an alternative format—must be displayed to learners prior to the start of the activity. This learner disclosure must be visible prior to the start of the activity and is an ANCC requirement. This disclosure outlines the following: relevant financial relationship status for all people in a position to control content of the educational activity (if a clinical topic); successful completion criteria needed to obtain contact hours, the accreditation statement; and the following if applicable: Joint Providership status, Commercial Support details, and expiration date.
Following the conclusion of the educational activity, the Nurse Planner and/or Planning Committee must follow a clearly defined method that includes analysis of learner input and a summary of data that is used to evaluate the overall effectiveness of the educational activity. The summative evaluation data is an analysis that is used to determine the impact of the educational activity in achieving the desired learning outcome and how its results are used to guide future educational activities, as applicable. Approximately 30 days after the activity, the nurse planner will share evaluation data with the activity contact. This data is collected via Survey Monkey and provides the following:
- Measurement of the established learning outcome (if being measured via evaluation)
- Feedback to the planning committee regarding presenters, content, and learner engagement strategies
- Each participant will receive their ANCC NCPD contact hours certificate via email upon completion
Joint Provider Agreement (If Applicable)
The Joint Provider Agreement document is used when the MGCCC SON&HP Provider Unit jointly provides the educational activity with another organization.
Exhibitor Agreement (If Applicable)
The Exhibitor Agreement document identifies the guidelines as well as the entity that has been chosen to be an exhibitor at an NCPD activity.
Commercial Support Agreement (If Applicable)
The Commercial Support Agreement document identifies any entity that has chosen to give commercial support to an NCPD activity that receives nursing contact hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
The request for contact hours needs to be submitted at least 45 days prior to the proposed activity date. Only one request form per activity per calendar year is required. For example, if your activity is a monthly series, only one request form is needed for the calendar year.
- A Nurse Planner from the Provider Unit is required to assess whether appropriate educational design principles are used and processes are consistent with the requirements of the ANCC NCPD Accreditation Program.
- In addition, certain documents must be completed and reviewed prior to the event in order to fulfill the requirements necessary to award contact hours.
You may not know the exact date of your event when you submit your request, which is perfectly fine. In the event you do not know the date, please select the first day of the month you think the event will occur in your best judgment.
Example:
- In your best judgment your upcoming event will occur in October.
- Please select October 1 as your activity date.
Your request will be triaged for eligibility by the Accredited Provider Program Director (APPD). A member of the Provider Unit team will reach out to you if clarification is needed, and then eligibility will be determined within 5 business days of your submission.
Once a request form is deemed eligible, a nurse planner from the provider unit will coordinate the educational design process and documentation requirements to provide contact hours for your activity.
Email windy.taylor@mgccc.edu and we will set up a time to discuss your request and determine eligibility.
No, ANCC and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) criteria are two distinct types of criteria and the process to award continuing education credit differ.
Yes. Continuing education is offered in a variety of ‘currencies’ and is vital to the professional development of the healthcare team. Formal documentation of continuing education is attainable by attending an event with one of the following: Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) or Continuing Medical Education (CME) attendance. Check with your credentialing or licensing body for specific requirements for maintaining certification or licensure.
The designated nurse planner will determine the contact hour value based on eligible content. Introductions, breaks, meal times, and ineligible content are excluded from the time-based calculation. Traditionally, this is calculated using the number of minutes of educational time divided by 60 = number of contact hours.
There needs to be a nurse planner from the provider unit (NEPD) and a content expert. There must be at least 2 people on the planning committee.
Yes, this is time spent narrowing a practice gap. An MGCCC employee or a vendor representative (with exceptions) can facilitate the in-service. You must submit a request form to initiate this process.
Maintenance of attendance rosters is the responsibility of the activity contact—not the nurse planner/provider unit. The provider unit is required to maintain all accreditation-related documentation for 6 years.
