This course provides an introduction to nursing and roles of the nurse, as well as profession related and client care concepts. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, quality care within the scope of practice of the licensed practice nurse and the registered nurse. The theoretical foundation for basic assessment and nursing skills is presented, and the student is given an opportunity to demonstrate these skills in a clinical laboratory setting with consideration of role delineation for the licensed practical nurse and the registered nurse. An introduction to the nursing process and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need provides a decision-making framework to assist students in developing effective clinical judgment skills with consideration of role delineation for the licensed practical nurse and the registered nurse.
