About eLearning
Who are we?
The eLearning department at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community college supports the needs of all students and faculty members who utilize an electronic (online) component in their courses. If you are seeking information about Canvas or online learning, we are your “go-to” people.
What is eLearning?
eLearning (online learning or distance education) is defined as a formal educational process in which the majority of the instruction occurs when the student and instructor are not in the same place. eLearning affords learners the opportunity to take a course anytime and anywhere. Instruction may be synchronous or asynchronous (real-time or not real-time) and may use a variety of technologies for course delivery and assessment.
eLearning Mission
We welcome the responsibility to respond to the educational needs of our community by providing an outstanding learning environment supported by excellent products and services. We achieve this by providing a comprehensive selection of credit courses offered via Internet delivery systems.
Goals and Objectives
The MGCCC eLearning department helps fulfill the college’s commitment to teaching and learning by:
-
Providing accessible, convenient, affordable, and flexible education to fit the busy lifestyles of learners and their families
-
Providing learning opportunities for learners unable to attend traditional on-campus courses
-
Utilizing appropriate technologies to meet the needs of a diverse community
Delivery Methods:
Online
There are two types of online courses: (1) MSVCC Online – courses that are offered through the Mississippi Virtual Community College (MSVCC) consortium and have away college students enrolled. (2) Native (MGCCC) Online – courses that are offered through MGCCC, with no away students enrolled. Both types of courses are entirely online, usually with no campus component, using the Canvas learning management system. All online courses require at least one proctored exam. Students are required to take their proctored exams through an MSVCC assessment center, a live virtual proctor, or through a college approved off-campus location.
Hybrid
Hybrid courses are a blending of the traditional face-to-face courses with an online component. In this format, you will complete a portion of the course online and then meet on campus as outlined in the class schedule. Hybrid courses must meet a minimum of 25% of the course face-to-face.
Web Enhanced
Web enhanced classes are classes that meet at regularly scheduled days and times on campus. These are traditional face-to-face classes, but contain an online component as an additional resource.
